Hyderabad: The Department of Zoology of St Francis College for Women organised a one-day seminar cum workshop in "Advances in Animal Sciences" on Tuesday for Zoology students. Krishan Kumar Sharma, Former Vice-Chancellor of Ajmer University, Rajasthan was the resource person and he elucidated on UGC's ban on animal dissections and Sono-Taxonomy (animal sounds to monitor and identify wildlife).

Sharma spoke about the culturing of cells to elucidate on the relevance of Totipotency. He went on to discuss how UGC's ban on animal dissections is relevant and how digital alternatives instead can be employed for learning anatomy and physiology. St Francis students got hands-on training in digital alternatives to understand animal dissections and also ensuring that crimes against animals are limited and the fauna is protected.

Another interesting aspect of this seminar is a new topic: Sono-taxonomy, animal sounds used to monitor and identify wildlife which would help our understanding of fauna better. Sharma also said that this could be made possible through "bio-acoustics".

Zoology Department of St Francis College now possesses bioinformatic tools required for various practical sessions in anatomy, physiology, evolutionary biology, genetics, endocrinology, developmental biology, skeletal systems, etc. without killing animals, all in virtual mode and still generating interest without any feeling of guilt of the crime of decreasing the fauna on this earth.
