Wellington: The number of overseas students studying in New Zealand in the January-August period jumped by 13 percent year on year, bringing record revenues for education, a report said.

According to the report issued by Education New Zealand, India, China and the Philippines led the increases in international student numbers, which totalled to 104,418 in the first eight months of this year, 11,760 more than the same period last year, Xinhua news agency reported.

International education was New Zealand's fifth-largest export sector, Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce said.

"An increase in enrolments brings an additional 91 million New Zealand dollars ($60 million) in tuition fee revenue for education providers, which has now reached a record 804 million New Zealand dollars ($534 million) for the January to August period," said Joyce.
