Understandably, it’s easy to take soil for granted because it’s mostly hidden from view—and few who live off the farm have reason to give it a second thought.

Understandably, it’s easy to take soil for granted because it’s mostly hidden from view—and few who live off the farm have reason to give it a second thought. Yet this amazing resource is responsible for nearly all life on the planet. Fortunately, scientists, conservationists and farmers are increasingly recognizing that keeping our soil healthy and functioning is the key to our survival.

It was in 2002 that the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) made a resolution proposing the 5th of December as World Soil Day to celebrate the importance of soil as a critical component of the natural system and as a vital contributor to human wellbeing. Under the leadership of the Kingdom of Thailand and within the framework of the "Global Soil Partnership", the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN (FAO) supported the formal establishment of the World Soil Day as a global awareness raising platform.

The FAO Conference, in June 2013, unanimously endorsed World Soil Day and requested official adoption at the 68th UN General Assembly. In December 2013, the 68th UN General Assembly declared 5th of December as the World Soil Day. World Soil day celebrates the importance of soil as a critical component of the natural system and as a vital contributor to the human commonwealth through its contribution to food, water and energy security and as a mitigator of biodiversity loss and climate change.

It is celebrated particularly by the global community of 60 000 soil scientists charged with responsibility of generating and communicating soil knowledge for the common good. many events focussed on increasing the public awareness of soil and its contribution to humanity and the environment. It is held on December 5th because it corresponds with the official birthday of H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, The King of Thailand, who has officially sanctioned the event.

Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Radha Mohan Singh asked the State governments about their preparations to celebrate the World Soil Day on December 5. Minister urged all the States to organise programmes at State, District, Block and Village levels as well as at KVKs and at ICAR institutes, in which farmers would be provided Soil Health Cards and provided knowledge about the importance of preserving the soil health.
