Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani on December 8 exhorted students from various parts of the country to "compete, but also co-operate" with each other and advised the youth to learn about different cultures to enhance their knowledge. She was speaking at the inauguration of four-day 'Kala Utsav' in New Delhi.

The festival is an initiative by the Human Resource Develoment (HRD) Ministry which is being conducted at Bal Bhawan and concludes at a star- studded ceremony at Siri Fort auditorium on December 11. Nearly 1,400 school children from across the country will present a melange of Indian culture through dance, music, theatre and visual art performances as part of the festival. The competitions will be held on the first three days and will conclude with a ceremony on December 11.

The theme of these performances is 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao'. In the month of January, a determined effort to counter the adverse sex ratio in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the nationwide ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ (save girl child and educate her) campaign from Panipat, in Haryana.

The initiative was started to fulfil the need for promoting aesthetics and arts in students. 144 online projects – one for each of the four art forms from each of the 36 states and union territories- have already been submitted by the competing teams. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the Kala Utsav website (http://ncert.nic.in/ kalautsav) on the Teacher’s day on September 05.

Kala Utsav recognises the importance of aesthetics and artistic experiences for secondary-level students, which play a major role in creating awareness of India’s rich cultural heritage and its vibrant diversity. Though India has a long tradition of art and artistic practices, a uniform process of identifying artistic talents in school education is yet to be developed.

The online art project (e-project) involves research on the selected topic and documentation of its different aspects. These e-projects will emerge as an empirical data-base on cultural mapping of the country. The database can further help us create a repository of artistic and cultural resources and the legacy continues.

The HRD Minister mentioned that on 11th December i.e. the day of prize giving ceremony, Nobel laureate Dr Kailash Satyarthi, dance exponent Sonal Man Singh and renowned author. Ruskin Bond will grace the occasion.
