Johnny Depp has proved his mettle yet again in the Dior Sauvage commercial that was released in the later part of 2015. But equal credit goes to the creative team also

While the best advertisements list of the year is already out, what seems to be prominently missing in it is the Johnny Depp’s that was rolled out in the latter half of 2015. The possible reason behind it could be the subtly abstract nature of the advertisement, which is out of the box, unlike the heartwarming, emotionally connecting ads in the list.

Now what we like about Depp’s ad is that it had less focus on style, product and the features of the product, and rather emphasised on the rich and intellectual experience that the brand offers. Who could better fit in the space than the experimental pirate himself? For those of you who didn’t watch the ad, here is the gist of it. And before we head to explaining what the commercial is like, a disclaimer- ‘Please do not judge the ad on basis of our explanation. We strongly recommend you to watch the commercial and have your own interpretation.’

Here are a few mixed reviews on the commercial

In the commercial, our captain wildly drives off to a random part in a desert, stops upon seeing a buffalo on his way and gets down. The cinematography excellence and the aptly engineered sfx of vultures crying and flapping away as Johnny gets out of his car is exceptional.

Depp thinks what he is looking for, stands at the spot in the desert as if it is the place he wanted to come to. The heart-stirring electric guitar solo as Johnny thinks of a way out of the place, out of the approaching mortality, is a piece of pie in the commercial.

Depp with his hoarse voice on the voiceover mic, “It’s something I can’t see. I can feel it.” He then finds his place, digs a hole, strips off his Caribbean pirate bling and buries them. What comes next is a breathtaking visual of the skies transiting, turning purple, as though the time is fading away. And as the sun sets, Johnny smiles at the fading horizon. This is when we see the signature Captain Jack Sparrow eyeliner.

The final bold voice- ‘It’s magic. Sauvage’.
