Gurgaon welcomes Puppets Raju and Babli ,to instill travel etiquettes among kids of Gurgaon. Travelling through public transport is part and parcel of the lives of people in Delhi-NCR. On an average 24 lakh commuters use the Delhi Metro daily. More than often commuters complain of jostling by fellow commuters. The rush to board the metro results in collision and at times it results in a chaos at platforms.

The same can be minimized if people understand the essence of a public transport and value the time and space of others the way they do it for themselves. Thus, to tackle this problem and spread awareness on traveling etiquettes, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) started an initiative by conducting puppet shows at schools to create disciplined commuters in the future.

DMRC conducted the first puppet show in Gurgaon today at Rotary Public School, Sector 22, Gurgaon. The aim of the show was to increase awareness on etiquettes, inculcate good manners among children and create disciplined Metro commuters for the future while travelling in metro. More than 200 students from class 6th and 7th attended the show in presence of Ms. Gulshan Dewan, Principal, Rotary Public School.

Every metro commuter needs to know and follow basic manners while travelling in it. Regular announcements are made to keep the metro premises clean and convey other important instructions as well, which are not always followed by many users. Public transport is essential to reduce the ever increasing burden on roads. The Delhi government has announced the odd and even rule to be applicable in the first half of January. This will put an additional burden on the already over-crowded metro.

“Puppet shows are a different and innovative way of inculcating mannerism during traveling especially to children. As they have a short attention span, the show has been designed for 15 minutes duration,” said a DMRC official.

Puppetry has been a unique art in India and everyone enjoys it especially children. Thus, DMRC adopted this medium of interactive puppet shows to imbibe school children with the good manners of commuting through metro. With the help of 2 puppets, siblings Raju and Babli, who are metro travelers, students were given many messages like not to cross the yellow line on platforms while waiting for the metro, not to step on metro tracks, not to eat/drink during travel, let people from the train de board first, offer your seat to ladies and elderly and more. Doing these activities harms all passengers and as well as creates chaos in the metro.

The 15 minutes puppet show was organized free of cost by DMRC. The Puppeteers were from `Katputli Colony’ in north Delhi and are a part of “Project Kayakalp” which intends to revive the art of puppetry.
Ishita Uppal, class 7th student, Rotary Public School said, “The puppet show was very informative and taught us the dos and don’ts of travelling in metro. It is important to take care of others, provide seat to someone needy and not to throw garbage on the platform.”
Ms. Gulshan Dewan, Principal, Rotary Public School said, “I thank Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials at our premises and appreciate this unique method of imparting manners in children. The students have understood the message taught and we look forward to more puppet shows for our students from other classes as well.”
