International mathematician Ivan Alba holds seminar on Mathematics at Rotary Public School, Gurgaon

Ivan Alba, international mathematician and leadership consultant conducted a workshop on ‘How to teach Mathematics’ at Rotary Public School, Gurgaon recently. With the objective of imparting maths skills to teachers and students across the world, India is the 14th country where he conducted his workshop apart from Italy, France, Turkey.

This is the first workshop he conducted at Gurgaon. It was attended by Ms. Gulshan Dewan, Principal, Rotary Public School, Mr. Sangram Singh, HOD, Maths, Rotary Public School and more than 40 Maths teachers from various schools of Dehi/NCR including DPS, DAV, Blue Bells, Summer Fields, The Maurya School and Amity international. He taught two important rules which need to be kept in mind while teaching Maths to students- Rule #1 Math makes sense and Rule #2 Everyone will be good at math.

Ivan Alba, Rotarian and international mathematician said, “I have dedicated my life in helping people and training both teachers as well as children how they will be good at math. Two of the most important rules that one needs to keep in mind are that what you are teaching to students should make sense to them. Many children do not understand math and develop a phobia for mathematics as it doesn't make sense to them. The second rule is that everyone will be good at math which is possible when they are clear of the basic concepts of math.”

With the help of various charts, worksheets and presentation he explained the basic concepts of math and taught primary mathematics utilizing algebra and its foundational ideas from kindergarten (counting, grouping, addition, subtraction etc.) and onwards so that students better understand the concept and skills. This also included modeling best practices in maths instruction and coaching teachers in how to use these techniques and strategies to assess students and teach them math more efficiently.
