Story 1:

It was a random Friday, around 9 AM. (Campus placements time)

I was in my final year engineering; I applied for a job in one of the reputed construction firms from Andhra Pradesh (INDIA).

Series of events which took place that day:

1. Resume got shortlisted.

2. Cleared written exam.

3. Cleared Group discussion

4. Cleared Technical Interview.

5. Done with my HR interview

I was just waiting for the results.

Meanwhile I was analyzing some factors like:

I never failed in any exam before in my life, never had a backlog, My CGPA is good. Interview went well so on and on.

I was very confident. When my dad called me and asked me how my interview was, I said I rocked it. He was very happy too.

Everything was just perfect until our placement coordinator came to me and told me they (Company) rejected me because my father’s income is high when compared to the others who applied for the same job.

My reaction was something like this:

I’ll continue the story…..

I just couldn’t believe the reason for rejection and I didn’t know how to tell this to my dad.

I went to the beach to spend some time alone.

I went home at around 9 PM. Meanwhile my dad was distributing sweets to my mom and my brothers. I felt terrible.

I told my dad “I failed for the first time”.

My dad replied (like nothing happened), “I know, that’s why I am distributing sweets”. (My best friend already narrated the whole story to my dad before I reached home)

He said. “You need to experience everything in life. Now you will know the value of success and you will relish it one day”.

This line changed my life…

I did my post graduation in one of the top institutes in India (NICMAR -Pune) and got placed in a Construction Giant with triple the package that firm was offering in my engineering.

Thanks Dad for everything !!

Story 2:

September 2015 : Ericsson drive

By then, I had already cleared Accenture and Infosys drive. But being a student of ECE background, clearing Ericsson was important to me.

I had Infosys drive on the previous Saturday and I was mesmerized by the pre-placement talk in which they bragged about their Mysore campus. It was truly amazing.

Finally that day arrived. (Monday). The screening process included 4 rounds. I cleared the aptitude test and the GD round. Now it was time for the technical interview. I was very confident and not nervous at all. It was around 8 pm and I was called for the interview. The interviewer looked a bit strict. I took a self note of keeping my humour content to a minimum.

So, he started with the obvious Introduction. Confidently keeping in mind that i should not bore him, I gave a decent 3 min introduction.

He then started firing technical questions at me.

What are microwaves ?

Describe the internal GSM architecture.

Draw BJT in amplification mode.

What is CC, CB, CE configuration?.

This went on for another 30 minutes.

Finally, when he was impressed with my answers and confidence, he shook hands with me and said,” I’ve not seen many people as confident as you in technical interviews. You may now ask your queries, if any.”

(In my mind palace: This interview was better than I thought it would be. I should ask an intelligent question which would enhance my chances of going to the next HR round).

After a pause of 10 secs i said “Sir, what are the additional skills that i need to learn before joining INFOSYS, if I clear this interview. “

He started looking at me with suspicion. I, not realizing the mistake I did, re-asked the question and started looking at him with round eyes.

He took a pause and said… I N F O S Y S. !!

All my confidence went to the gutter and I started stammering ” Sir, I mean sir what i was saying was.. ” (completely forgetting which company I was giving this interview for)

“ERICSSON”, he said.

I was completely blank not even realizing that I was still sitting there in front of him. He stood up, asked me to show myself to the door. I got up walked slowly towards the door and got out.

10 mins later when the results were out !

REJECTED !!

Story 3:

This one company came for recruitment (pool campus) during my 4th year of engineering. There were 5 rounds before the HR one. SOMEHOW I managed to clear all the rounds and I was selected for the final (HR). There were 30 students selected for HR round after the technical one. When my turn came, I went inside the room with confidence and answered all the questions they asked. Before leaving one guy asked this:

Interviewer: So, tell me more about your family.

Me: My father, he is a professor. My mother was an education officer. My sister is pursing engineering along with me.

Interviewer: Ok, are you planning for higher studies?

Me: No, I want to work after graduation.

Interviewer: Take it in written from me that you won’t join our company and go for higher education.

Me ( blank face) : No, Sir, i will not.

Interviewer: You hail from well educated family, do you think you will stop after graduation. I don’t think so. By the way, nice talking to you. All the best.

Me (confused face) : OK, thank you !

Results: 29 candidate got selected. No prizes for guessing, the only person who was not selected was me! :'(

PS: I am doing Ph.D now !

Moral: You can’t fool the HR guy.

Story 4:

This happened to a female friend of mine when she appeared for a TCS interview. Lets call this female T . Her technical interview had gone very well and the following happened in the HR:

Interviewer: Would you be comfortable being posted anywhere in India?

T: Actually,Sir, my mum is very old and is in fragile health. Being the only child of my parents it is my responsibility to take good care of her. This is the reason which prohibits me from traveling around let alone living in a different city.

Interviewer : Starts asking other questions ..

(After sometime).

Interviewer: We are very impressed by the technical knowledge that you have and we’d like to consider you for our New York branch. What do you think about that?

T: Sir I’d love to go to New York . I was waiting for this opportunity and I assure you that I’ll work hard and you’ll never regret this decision.

REJECTED !

Story 5:

Tata Consultancy Services – College Campus Interview

I was in my third year of B.Tech. I had volunteered to work for the Training and Placement Department in my college. So, on this day, when TCS was interviewing the candidates, they asked me to sit in one corner of Technical Interview Room and note down the answers to a few questions for each candidate.

A thing to note here is that these interviews were for the posts of Software Engineers / Developers.

So, now comes Mr Danish Khan’s (Male, B. Tech Final Year, Computer Science)turn to get interviewed.

Danish: “Good Morning Sir. how are you today?”

Interviewer1: “hmmm.. well what can i say, your college does not seem to have any logical candidates. Anyways, sit down.”

Danish: “Thanks.” Hands his file to the interviewer.

Interviewer1: “So, Danish huh?”

Danish: “Yes Sir.”

Interviewer1: “Ha ha.. sure?”

Danish: with a puzzled look “Umm.. Yes. Sure.”

Interviewer1: Looks on the first page of the resume for two seconds, turns the page, and 3 seconds later dismisses the resume. “Okay so tell me one thing Danish, why should we hire you?”

Danish: “Well Sir, i am very good at programming. I have a good sense of Logical Reasoning and my aptitude is…..” interrupted by the interviewer .

Interviewer1: “Ok, leave that. Tell me, if you are the Project Manager of a project which has failed, what will you do?”

Danish: “Sir, i will learn from it. To me, every failure is am opportunity to learn. And i will make sure that no other project i take up in the future suffers from the mistakes we made in this failed project. I know the importance of processes like CMMI Level 5 etc. I will incorporate many application of such processes to analyze exactly why it failed… “interrupted by the interviewer AGAIN.

Interviewer1: “Ok ok ok. Can you tell me something about Risk Mitigation in a XYZ type of a project.”

Danish: “Well, no sir. i am a fresher. I am not aware of such industrial terms.”

Interviewer1: “Okay then tell me if i drop two programming languages under free fall of gravity, will they strike the ground together?”

Danish: now puzzled and frustrated “Sir??”

Interviewer1: “you don’t know?”

Danish: Wondering “Sir, I don’t get it. A free falling object is an object that is falling under the sole influence of gravity. but programming languages are virtual things. I mean they are not objects.”

Interviewer1: “Yes, but they are object oriented, right? Or you disagree?”

Danish: “Well Sir..”

Suddenly Interviewer 2 (Another TCS professional who was taking interviews in another room) opens the door and comes into the room.

Interviewer2: “Tea?”

Interviewer1: “Yeah. Let us go.” Looks at Danish and says “Thanks Danish. That will be all”.

Danish still puzzled and shocked shakes his head and leaves.

Interviewer2: “Kaisa chal raha hai?” (How is it going?)

Interviewer1: “Yaar mera loundo ka quota kahatam ho gaya. Ab 8 ladkiya aur uthani hain bas.” ( I have finished recruiting the males. I have to still recruit 8 females now.)

Interviewer2: “Jaldi karna yaar. Ek koi Meenakshi hai gori si. Uska dekh lena.” (Make it fast. And there is fair toned girl called Meenakshi. Give her consideration.)

Interviewer1: “Ok”.

He was rejected for being a male. and so were 20+ more male candidates who got interviewed after him.

Edit:

Guys, this is just an event about how some people got rejected for a weird reason. Therefore this story qualifies the answer. It is not about blaming TCS and it is definitely not against fair girls. I actually like TCS, it gives a lot of jobs to aspiring engineers in India. That’s a good thing.
