Growth is an important aspect in one’s career and we all aspire to continuously grow and reach new heights. However, many of us find ourselves in situations where we don’t get noticed or get promoted at work. We discussed some probable reasons for this in an earlier story– ‘Why you are not getting promoted’.

Sanjay Shetty, director, key accounts, Randstad India, shares some common mistakes which must be avoided if you want to get promoted.

Don’t stagnate - We tend to get completely busy with our tasks and workload and deadlines that we often forget to upskill. The enthusiasm to learn will surely get you noticed by managers. Attend company trainings, learn from seniors, peers, and even juniors and never miss a chance to absorb something new. Explore new tools, processes and ideas. Remember that learning is a never ending process and keeps you alive at your workplace.

Communicate and interact with other teams – We often interact only with the people we directly work with. However, to move up the corporate ladder, it is essential to have a good understanding across teams and have complete domain knowledge. Ask plenty of questions and learn how different teams depend on each other and work with each other. Understand the impact of every activity you are involved in and constantly work to make it better.

Seek active feedback – A lot of us can never see what we are doing wrong and we feel embarrassed to ask others. A third person’s perspective will help fix a lot of mistakes. Ask your manager how you can prepare and improve to fit into your next role. Peer feedback and feedback from your juniors enables you to see what is hampering your promotion and growth. Take all this feedback positively and slowly work on it.

Show confidence but avoid overconfident – Most of us lack conviction when we speak. It is also extremely important to never panic when things go wrong and always stay calm and focussed when there is work pressure. These are huge factors that make the management trust you enough to shoulder you with more responsibilities and a more challenging role.

Mentor your juniors – It is critical to remember that we have learnt a lot because our seniors in the team sacrificed time to guide and teach us at work. Most of us forget to give back. Make time to share your knowledge and best practices and invest time in training people. Use your experience to improve processes for your team or other teams in the organisation. This will not only improve your communication skills but also show the management that you think beyond yourself and are ready to lead a team and move on towards more strategic roles.

These changes will make you a better employee and fuel your growth in the company. Never be disheartened when promotions don’t come in time because they also depend on company budgets and profits. Just keep focussing on all the positive things and that promotion should come your way real soon.
