A gutsy woman candidate selected by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for Malkajgiri Assembly constituency has been encountering certain problems that are causing embarrassment to the party leadership.
A committee, comprising persons like Prof. Ramachandraiah of CESS, Dr Ramanjaneyulu of Centre for Sustainable Agriculture, Venkata Reddy and Bellaiah Naik besides Ravela Aruna, a central observer, has been formed to examine and recommend names of the aspirants.
After a scrutiny of all applications, the committee had selected Chandra Supriya, a High Court advocate. She lost her eyesight when she was 14 years old and has been valiantly fighting against all odds in her personal and professional lives. She did not lose a single case in her 16 years of practice as an advocate. She was felicitated by eminent persons like former President Abdul Kalam for her exemplary courage. She is one of the three daughters of a retired employee. She is blessed with an extraordinary ability to recognise people by their voice. She is a local and is acquainted with the people and their problems. Supriya’s name was conveyed to the Central Committee of AAP.
Purushottam, in-charge of south India affairs of AAP, had conveyed the approval of the party’s national leadership. But then, a person by name Seshagiri Rao began a protest fast a couple of days ago at the party office saying that his credentials were better suited to the constituency and they were not taken into consideration.
Seshagiri Rao claims to have read 6,000 books. He is known to be an authority on religious matters. The committee had asked him to opt for any other constituency since Supriya’s name has been finalised for Malkajgiri Assembly constituency. But the scholar has been refusing to budge. The members of the committee are in a tight spot not knowing how to deal with the problem. According to one of the committee members, Seshagiri Rao had approached the committee after Supriya’s name was intimated to Delhi.
