Hyderabad: Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwarlal said that the name and fan symbol of YSRCP candidate B Shobha Nagi Reddy would remain on EVMs in Allagadda Assembly segment and the votes that would be polled for the candidate will be treated as NOTA (None Of The Above).

Addressing ‘Meet-the-Press’ on Saturday at Press Club, Bhawarlal said that the YSRCP is not a recognised party and the votes polled to her will have no validity. He said that was the rule as per Peoples’ Representation Act. He said since YSRCP was just a registered party, it was not possible to give a chance to another candidate on behalf of YSRCP in the election.

Reacting to a spate of questions on the issue, he said, he had written to the Election Commission for clarification but his office had not got any reply so far. He said, “Allagadda is a special case and I will write again to the Commission for clarification on the issue”.

The CEO said that the special squads had seized 4.5 lakh liters’ of illegal liquor in Andhra Pradesh and it was 56 cent of the total liquor seizure in the country. He said that some Rs 114 crore cash was caught while it was being transported illegally and this too was about 56 per cent of the total cash seized elsewhere in the country.

He said that around 3000 cases were filed under violation of the model code of conduct (MCC) in 2009 elections and the cases were still pending in various courts. He said that they decided to ask the Commission to hear the MCC violation cases by setting up fast-track courts. He said that the candidates who spent more than the stipulated expenditure would be disqualified.
