New Delhi: BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Saturday slammed the absence of autonomy in Doordarshan. His remarks assume significance in the backdrop of the controversy surrounding his interview to the Doordarshan. In his tweet to mark the World Press Freedom Day, Modi stated, “Greetings to journalist friends on World Press Freedom Day. Free press is a democracy's cornerstone & must be preserved in letter & spirit. On days such as this, I feel very sad to see our National TV channel struggling to maintain its professional freedom. We have witnessed the horrors of Emergency when freedom of press & freedom of expression were suppressed. It is a blot on our democracy.”

Modi’s comments come as his party, the BJP, has alleged that his interview aired a week ago was heavily edited on the orders of the Government. Remarks relating to Priyanka Gandhi and Congress President’s Political Secretary Ahmed Patel. Sources stated that Modi’s office had also recorded the interview at a parallel level, which was released after the controversy.
