The South Central Railway (SCR) is working on an android-based mobile app that would enable passengers to track MMTS running status through Global Positioning System (GPS). At present, all the MMTS trains have a GPS module onboard which obtains its latitude and longitude from a GPS satellite. This particular module transfers the data to the railway server, and has been enabling the railway authorities to monitor the location of various running trains. Now, these facilities, which are already up and displayed on television screens at major railway stations, would be down to the smartphones.

Railway officials explain that a passenger can make use of the data with each of the 26 railway stations in the city as reference points. The application is expected to provide dynamic information that can tell a passenger whether an MMTS train is on its way or how far it is from a particular station.
"The application is being developed by a city-based firm and we expect to roll it out in a month's time. It would be up for free download," said K Sambasiva Rao, chief spokesperson, SCR.
Apart from real-time train schedule information, information like timetable, passenger helpline information and other static information would also be provided through the application. The app would also provide static running information on express trains with major railway stations as reference, where such trains pass through or halt.
At present, the SCR operates 121 MMTS services on Falaknuma - Secunderabad/Hyderabad - Lingampalli routes over a 42 km distance ferrying around 1.5 lakh passengers per day. More than 200 LED monitors have been set up at all the 26 MMTS stations to relay train running information.
