The ’ Union (GHMEU) went on a strike on Monday. The strike was against the GHMC’s move to award a part of the sanitation duties to Ramky Enviro Group. As part of the strike, the GHMEU employees and leaders staged a rasta roko at the GHMC parking lots, making sure that all the vehicles remained stationary. On April 12, all the employees’ unions of the GHMC had held a roundtable conference to contemplate the plan action to be taken to get the contract with Ramky scrapped.
Udhari Gopal, president, GHMEU, said, “If the contract with Ramky is allowed, the company would have full powers to dictate the price for door-to-door garbage collection. It would also put a lot of people out of jobs. We cannot let that happen to our employees.”
He alleged, “When the GHMC claimed that it did not have land to provide housing facilities for the employees, from where did it find the land to give to Ramky? Ramky has been involved in many scams and entrusting such a company with a deal of such importance could only lead to more problems.”
The demands raised by the GHEMU are cancellation of the contract with Ramky immediately, increase in salaries of all the outsourced employees and purchase of new garbage dumping vehicles.
Gopal added, “Until all our demands are met we will continue with the strike.”
In March the GHMC had decided on handing over the task of door-to-door garbage collection to Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited (REEL) in two zones namely, East and West. As part of the contract REEL would be responsible for the collection, segregation and transfer of the garbage. The company was also given the authority to charge a nominal fee of Rs 20-25 to collect from each household for their services. It was also given the authority to revise the charges as per the location and amount of garbage. This deal was drafted in the year 2009, but due to protests from the unions it was put on hold. This year the civic officials decided to implement the programme and put an end to the union leadership.
GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar, however, assured that there would be no displacement of existing workers.
