At the time it has become a stupendous task for the police to scope out violators. The general public comes into play as responsible citizens of the country to be vigilant on their surroundings and becoming the first informants. Employing this concept, the police officials from both the Hyderabad and Cyberabad police departments recently launched the ‘Be a Crime Buster’ initiative, where any person who possesses information on a crime or criminal can pass on the information to the police.

Talking about the initiative a senior police official said, “It is very essential for a cop to have access to intelligence. In this regard, the general public is an important asset. The information given by them is extremely useful.”

He further said that there are roughly 50 crime busters who work closely with the police officials. The information which is given by the crime buster is always kept under wraps and the name of the informant is not disclosed in the report. And, if the information given by the crime buster turns out to be right the informants are also rewarded.

But even the police have their own qualms on the information given by the crime busters. Anjani Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), says, “On an average day we get information from close to 75 odd people. But, in some of the cases the information that is given out is not accurate.”

Another senior police official said, “To ensure that the crime busters are kept safe, they are asked to first establish a contact in their respective police station. They are further asked not to divulge their personal details in the initial stages. The crime busters should also make sure that the person who would be on the receiving end was capable of handling the information.”

Raju, inspector, cyber crimes, said, “People try to push off their personal grudges as a crime and report it to us. It becomes a tedious job for the police to weed out such cases. But all of that are minimal, crime busters have been pivotal points in solving many crimes recently.”
