Urdu Maskan building was finally inaugurated on March 3 this year and the Salar-e-Millat Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi auditorium has become the most sought after venue for functions. Since its inauguration, more than 18 functions have taken place. The auditorium also doubles up for educational activities.
Raza, a social activist who works in the empowerment of women in the Old City, says, “For long the people of the Old City were deprived of a good cultural space. Now with the Urdu Maskan building there is a venue with good facilities and people of Old City need not look beyond the Musi to conduct cultural activities.”
The Urdu hall is abuzz with activity but it took more than two decades for completion. Mohammed Moinuddin Khan, manager, Urdu Ghar, says, “There is still some work pending in the Khaja Shouq hall. Once that is complete we would be able to go full throttle and promote the place and make optimum use of the facility.”
The pending works include PVC flooring, construction of security room, electrification work and minor work in the cellar and ground floor in the mini auditorium. The cost of the pending work is Rs 21 lakh. The AP Health Medical Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (APHMIDC), the agency entrusted with the construction has to release the funds.
SA Shukoor, director, Urdu Academy, is hopeful that the funds would be released soon as queries for the use of both the auditoriums are increasing by the day.
Free computer classes
Three hundred and six students avail the six-month free training classes in hardware and software. 210 students have enrolled in the Advanced Diploma in Computer Applications and Multilingual Desktop publishing and 96 students for the hardware course. Mohammed Moinuddin says these courses have become popular among the youth. The eligibility is 10th class pass in Urdu medium or the candidate should have taken Urdu as first language.
Hyder Ali, a research scholar at Hyderabad Central University and resident of Moghulpura, says, “The library at Urdu Maskan has over 5,000 books. This is a good opportunity for the authorities to add more books on Deccan history, Islamic history, Persian and Arabic languages and develop the centre.”
The reading room is open from 8 am to 8 pm and has visitors all through the day. Shama, a resident of Purani Haveli, says, “With the opening up of Urdu Maskan the people now have a cultural space and there is no need to look beyond.
The tariff for Salar-e-Millat memorial auditorium is Rs 8,000 for 4 hours that is inclusive of electricity, sound system and parking facility. There is a caution deposit of Rs 5,000 which is refundable. The tariff for the Khaja Shouq hall is Rs 1,200 and Rs 2,500 if one wants to avail AC facility.
The Salar-e-Millat memorial auditorium can seat 425 and the Khaja Shouq hall 150 people.
