Lionel Messi“I have seen the player who will inherit my place in Argentinean football and his name is (Lionel) Messi. Messi is a genius and he can become an even better player. His potential is limitless and I think he’s got everything it takes to become Argentina’s greatest player”

This eulogy comes from none less than Diego Maradona. And they feature prominently in the trailer for the documentary 'Messi' that was released on Thursday.

It traces the moorings, growth and rise of the man who is seen as the successor to Argentina’s most iconic footballer ever.

It tells Messi’s story, including his vomiting on the grounds, how Barcelona brought him to La Masía, his Barça days and his eventual rise to superstardom where he sits comfortably.

The four-time player of the year always dreamt of being at the top and was perennially compared to Maradona. This drew criticism, which grew strident when he did not sing the national anthem. At the 2010 World Cup, Messi played as the team's leader, with Diego Maradona as his coach, and that didn't go down well. Lionel Andres Messi was born as one of four children to a steel factory worker Jorge Horacio Messi and a part-time cleaner Celia Maria Cutticcini in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina.
Messi attended his primary school at Las Heras Elementary School also in Rosario. He was not able to attend high school due to his health condition and his family needed to transfer to Barcelona for constant treatment.

Football is Messi’s life which he devoted completely for the game. He overcame initial bickering while playing club football on the sheer strength of his versatile on-field dynamism that endeared him to everyone, including his most vocal critics.

The documentary features interviews with the likes of Johan Cruyff, Javier Mascherano, Gerard Piqué, Andrés Iniesta and many others who were part of Messi's journey to greatness.

The release has been timed for the World Cup 2014 in Brazil. Production house Mediapro declared the news adding that the film, which is helmed by Spanish cult director Alex de la Iglesia, is a tribute to the 27-year-old Argentine striker.

Quite ironically, Messi is the only contemporary superstar, who still remains in action in the finals.

A third championship triumph for Argentina and a spark of Messi brilliance will put his name alongside the greats like Maradona and Pele. Many already vouch that he already belongs there.
