Eid-ul-Fitr would be celebrated across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on Tuesday as the crescent of Holy Shavval has been sighted on Monday night.

This was announced by a team of noted Islamic scholars under the aegis of the Central Ruiyat-e-Hilal Committee - Hyderabad Deccan.

The Committee, which met at the Hussaini Building at Moazzam Jahi Market on Monday evening, made the announcement after getting a confirmation from all the districts and neighbouring states that the crescent has been sighted.

The meeting was attended by Majlis-e-Ulema-e-Deccan secretary-general and Muslim Personal Law Board member, Moulana Syed Qubul Pasha Shuttari and others religious scholars including Mufti Khaleel Ahmed, Mufti Azeemuddin and Moulana Syed Sajjad Hussaini.

Governor ESL Narasimhan, AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana State Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao wished the people on the occasion. In spite of the intermittent rain in various parts of the city, Muslims were seen busy shopping and making arrangements for Eid.

The day would begin with morning mass prayers at Idgahs. Thousands of people would gather at Madannapet, Mir Alam Tank, Secunderabad, Masab Tank and Golconda Idgahs for prayers.

The Old City will wear a festive look with people dressed in all their fineries, exchanging Eid greetings, bowls of Sheer Korma made from vermicelli, milk and ghee. Besides celebrations, many also indulge in charity. For many it is a time to help the poor. Zakat (obligatory alms tax of 2.5 per cent of one's annual savings) is often collected from families and are given to the needy. While most businesses would remain closed on the day, sweet shops often do brisk business.

Traffic police has issued diversions across the city for the event.
