Principal Secretary of Home Affairs B Prasada Rao stressed the need for promoting the use of solar energy for both commercial and domestic purposes in the State to protect the environment. Speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day national seminar on ‘Sustainable Environment through Green Energy’ held at Andhra Loyola College on Friday, he said, “There is ample scope for us to switch to solar energy to meet our needs. Surplus solar power can be generated if the private players in the industry are encouraged.”

Prasada Rao stressed on the need to develop a comprehensive energy policy. “Energy policy has to be changed to promote the use of solar and other non-conventional sources of energy. Focus should be on adopting power saving and power efficient technologies,” he opined In his keynote address, Prof. M Basaveswara Rao, Dean of Sciences, Krishna University, underlined the need to promote the use of green energy for sustainable development. Emphasis should be laid on multi-layer solar cells to enhance the efficiency. These cells generate double the energy compared to conventional ones. Technology that helps in meeting the current energy demands should not affect the future generations,'' he said.

Prof Chintalapati Sasikala of Department of Environment Sciences, JNTU, spoke about Bioremediation and its advantages and disadvantages. College Rector Fr D Ravi Sekhar, principal Fr GAP Kishore, correspondent Fr S Raju and faculty members of Botany, Zoology and Physics departments were present.
