The Collector said, “Shop workers should make use of various development schemes being implemented by the government. There are abundant employment opportunities for skilled and unskilled workers in the city as the capital region is coming up in its vicinity. The government has initiated several measures to empower workers of the unorganised sector and for their welfare,” the Collector said.

Joint Commissioner of Labour (Eluru Zone-II) MN Varahala Reddy said that the zonal sports and cultural meet would be an opportunity to shop workers to showcase their talent. “The department has laid emphasis on effective enforcement of labour laws to better safeguard the interests of workers of the unorganised sector and ensure that they are paid minimum wages,” he said.

More than 400 shop workers from Krishna, East and West Godavari districts are participating in the sports meet. The events included ball badminton, volleyball, kabaddi, tennikoit, shot-put, 100 metre and 500 metre run, javelin and discus throw and long jump.

Prizes will be awarded to the winners at the valedictory of the meet to be held on Wednesday. The State level sports meet for shop workers will be held in the city on the eve of May Day.District Sports Development Officer (DSDO) P Ramakrishna and Labour Department officials were present at the inaugural function.
