The city welcomed the unexpected showers on Friday, which has been experiencing sweltering heat for the past few weeks. The climate changed all of a sudden with dark clouds hovering over the city which was accompanied by a cool breeze and even lightning. Following the rains, the maximum and minimum temperature recorded 39.9 degrees Celsius and 23.8 degrees Celsius respectively.

A landslide at Indrakeeladri blocked the road, leading to traffic congestion

The roads, which were wearing a deserted look in the afternoon in the recent weeks, were buzzing with activities. Children were seen playing in groups on the roads enjoying their summer vacation to the hilt. But all was not hunky dory. Owing to the rains, several boulders rolled down on to the main road at Sri Kanakadurga Temple on Indrakeeladri Hills creating panic among commuters. Vehicular traffic, from Hyderabad entering Vijayawada, was disrupted following the incident.

When contacted, a Met official said the change in weather was expected and was not unusual. “Thunderstorm development is usual in summer. Generally, such activity takes place early morning or afternoon. It has occurred after a big gap this summer. The prevailing weather conditions are likely to continue on Saturday too and the forecast is cloudy sky and thunderstorms,” the Met official said.
