Human body gets dehydrated rapidly in summer. Consumption of ample amount of fluids helps keep the body hydrated. But having fluids isn’t enough to keep the whole body fit; skin and hair are exposed to intense sunlight in summer. Hence, it is important to take proper care to protect them from the scorching sun and pollution in summer.

Following are some skin and hair care tips offered by dermatologist Dr Chalasani Praveena:

The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of sunscreen does not matter, its application at regular intervals is what matters the most. Application of sunscreen once in every two or three hours helps get the desired protection to your skin from exposure of intense sunlight. It is advisable to carry a sunscreen wherever you go. Even if you are at home, you need to apply sunscreen to better protect your skin.

Healthy diet with lots of green leafy vegetables and seasonal fruits and regular exercise are a must. Choosing the right sunscreen is a challenge. It is advisable to choose lotion or gel based sunscreen rather than a cream based one for pimple or acne ridden skin. People with normal skin can use either of the sunscreen which gives protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

-It is also important to choose wisely between physical and chemical sunscreens. Physical sunscreen is recommended for outdoors. If the skin is dry and lips are chapped, moisturiser (non-greasy) needs to be applied first. Sunscreen can be applied after the moisturiser sets in. One has to wait for a minimum of 15 minutes to put on make-up on the sunscreen applied face.

-Though hair is one of the most exposed parts of the body to sunlight, its protection is often neglected. As a result, hair becomes dry and frizzy. It is better to wash hair with mild shampoos as many times as possible depending on its condition to make it look beautiful and shiny. Any kind of hair treatments in summer should be strictly avoided.
