Debit card fraud victims warn Syndicate Bank to reimburse stolen amount with 10 days

About 15 Syndicate Bank customers protested in front of the Picket branch on Saturday demanding compensation for the debit card fraud which came to light three weeks ago. On April 24, police received complaints from 24 customers that fraudulent withdrawals were recorded from their accounts which ranged from Rs 10,000 to Rs 10 lakh.

This was soon after they withdrew cash from the branch’s ATM. Cops suspect that fraudsters would have attached a skimmer to the ATM card slot to steal data and clone the cards. The account holders staged a dharna and warned that if they were not compensated within 10 days they would not allow the branch to function.

The customers also lodged complaints to the CCS, Bank’s Ombudsman and to the Syndicate Bank higher ups to take action immediately. The bank responded that the issue has been raised with the higher-ups and the Central Crime Station and to the National Payment Corporation of India.

C Ravi Varma, DCP, CCS, said, “We strongly appeal to the people to use ATM centres which are manned by security guards and check the card slot and the premises of the ATM for any suspicious additional devices. Never give debit card details to any one as no bank employee needs to ask for them."
