Prof K Viyyanna Rao, former vice-chancellor of Acharya Nagarjuna University, underlined the need for political reforms to cleanse the social system ridden with corruption. Speaking at a meet against corruption, organised by the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) and All India Students Federation (AISF) at Tummalapalli Kalakshetram on Saturday to mark the 101st birth anniversary of Communist leader Chandra Rajeswara Rao, he said, “The bigger the democracy, the bigger the corruption is.

Lobbying has become an integral part of the democratic system now. The ultimate beneficiary of various policy decisions taken by the Centre over the years seems to be the corporate sector as poverty remains unabated.” Stressing the need to root out corruption in society, Viyyanna Rao said that the government is not utilising the country’s natural resources for the benefit of people. “Instead, it is allotting mining rights of the precious natural resources to the corporates at throwaway prices.

The indiscriminate mining of natural resources by the corporates was posing a serious threat to the environment, besides displacing scores of poor villagers. The corrupt system should be cleansed to eradicate poverty in the country and achieve economic growth in real terms,” he observed.

Siddhartha Law College principal Ch Diwakar Babu said, “The government is ignoring education and public health which are vital for the development of a nation. Corruption in the society is rampant as the regulatory bodies are virtually powerless. More than 35 per cent of country’s population has a Body Mass Index (BMI) of below standard 18.5, which is a matter of grave concern.

The non-plan expenditure needs to be curtailed to promote economic growth. There is also an urgent need to focus on improving standard of living of people and human resource development,” he said. Emphasising the need to curb corruption to achieve economic growth, he opined that the Right to Information Act is an effective tool to fight against the social evil.

“Social activists and youth should utilise the RTI Act as a powerful weapon to combat corruption in the society and eradicate poverty,” he concluded. Later, an anti-corruption oath was administered to participants of the meeting. AIYF and AISF activists also took out a rally from Tummalapalli Kalakshetram to Challapalli Bungalow to mark the birth anniversary of Rajeswara Rao.

AIYF State president A Ayya Swamy, AISF State president Sk Karimulla, general secretary I Bayyanna, CPI State executive committee member Muppalla Nageswara Rao and others were present.
