A round table meeting of the farmers and the farm leaders held here on Tuesday asked the Central government to drop the Land Acquisition Ordinance. The meeting also blamed the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for acquiring land from the farmers and giving it to the corporate companies on a 99 year lease.

Retired IAS officer, T Gopala Rao, said that Koneru Ranga Rao Committee, which had studied the availability of government lands in the State, had suggested to the government to distribute vacant lands to the landless poor. He said that there are 40 lakh acres of government land is available in the State for distribution.

He regretted that the successive governments have ignored the implementation of the Koneru Ranga Rao Committee recommendations since 2009, despite the government issuing GO 100 for the same. He wanted the farmers and the farm labourers to fight for the distribution of surplus lands to the landless poor.

The Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham general secretary Vangala Subbarao, who chaired the meeting, criticized the State government for taking away 33,000 acres of fertile and multiple crop lands from the farmers for building capital. He also found fault with the government for asking for de-notification of the forest lands which would all be given to the corporate companies.

Stating that the capital would require just 5,000 acres, he pointed out that the government was acquiring 50,000 acres. In addition to this, the government was also taking 15,000 acres at Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram for airport, 10,000 acres in Kalahasti in Chittoor district, 5,000 acres in Nellore district, 32,000 acres in Kurnool district and 15,000 acres in West Godavari district which would all be given to the industrialists and corporate companies, he added.

The state government was trying to give these lands to the corporate companies from Japan, Singapore, China and other countries, Subbarao added. The former MLC Jelli Wilson, Andhra Pradesh Vyasaya Karmika Sangham general secretary V Venkateswarlu, Rythu Sangham vice-president M Suryanarayana and others spoke.
