A group of artisans from West Bengal is engaged in making Lord Ganesha idols at Gangur in various hues and shapes ahead of the festival to promote eco-friendly clay idols which are water soluble. Society for Awareness and Vision on Environment (SAVE), Hyderabad, for the first time, has come to the city to promote the idols observing the growing popularity of 'Ganesh Utsav' among citizens.

Speaking to The Hans India, SAVE founder Vijay Ram said that the 11-day coluorful festival will commence from September 17 and will conclude with the immersion of idols in nearby water bodies. According to Hindu Dharmashastra only clay idols of Lord Ganesha promote spirituality among the devotees.

The demand for eco-friendly idols has increased as majority of the people are shifting towards the use of eco-friendly idols for the festival. The skill has been passed on to artisans by tradition and now they have honed their art to such levels. "We use simple clay and sand from Ganga River to carve the idols measuring up to 2 ½ ft to 5 ft. Other items used to decorate idols are also eco-friendly and do not cause any harm to the river Krishna and nearby water bodies into which they will be immersed at the end of the festival," said Ram.

“These idols are biodegradable and easily dissolve in water. We have received orders from Kodada, Jaggiahpeta, Eluru and Machilipatnam.” He added. Prices of these idols range from Rs 3, 000 to Rs 5,000; small idols are available for Rs 50. Interested customers can contact SAVE in charge, Y Kaleswara Rao on 9490743425 and 0866- 2583426.
