The National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) will organise protests at the statues of Mahatma Gandhi in the State on Independence Day condemning the increase in atrocities against women in recent times.

NFIW State general secretary P Durga Bhavani on Wednesday said, ``Women are being subjected to oppression in the country even 68 years after Independence. Discrimination against women and the girl child is still continuing in society.

Atrocities against women have increased manifold in recent years. The successive governments at the Centre have failed to safeguard the interests of women from oppression. NFIW will highlight all these women's issues as part of the protest.''

Atrocities against women should be checked with an iron hand. Steps should also be taken for effective enforcement of laws meant to safeguard women’s interests. Ending discrimination against women reflects the real Independence of the country, she Added.
