Ricoh Imaging, the parent company of Pentax, has announced the launch of K-S2 DSLR with 20.1 MP APS-C CMOS sensor at a price of Rs 56,995. The DSLR will come with DA 18-50 mm F4.5-6 retractable lens and DA 50-200 mm F4.5-6 lenses exclusively on Amazon India. The Pentax name holds a huge legacy in photography, even in India.

At 1960 Photokina trade show, Asahi Optical (then Pentax) showed its Spot-matric prototype which took exposure measurements via a spotmeter through the taking lens. It was an incredible innovation that later became an instant success in spite of production issues.

Pentax then went on to introduce K-series with K mount lenses that incorporated aperture-priority, auto exposure with manual shutter speed. Pentax still holds a unique position in medium format cameras and its mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, the Pentax Q, is highly appreciated.

Asked about Pentax’s positioning of its new DSLR, a Pentax executive said numbers have never been the target for Pentax and the same stays going forward. “Also Pentax has a tie-up with Amazon India here and plans to launch full-frame camera soon.” Ricoh bought Pentax in early 2011 and has been slowly evolving its products in the consumer segment.

Ricoh has brought the K series and Pentax GR models along with some of its waterproof cameras to India. Asked about Pentax’ niche status, the executive added, “Pentax is not meant for street photography, but for outdoor photography. With the weather sealed design, Pentax cameras can work even at challenging conditions.”

With Pentax K-S2, Ricoh is aiming to enter the domain of Canon and Nikon and yet manage its renowned identity. Pentax K-S2 comes with a uniquely designed DA 18-50mm lens which will serve as kit lens but of a retractable type. This lens is nearly 2-cm shorter than 18-55 mm Nikkor DX kit lens.

With double kit option, Pentax is making sure that photographers get to capture different scenarios easily. Pentax K-S2 also features a 3.0” vari-angle LCD screen with 11-point AF. It can record 1080p videos at 30 frames per second and has a native ISO of 51,200. The camera sports Wi-Fi and NFC for immediate sharing with mobile devices.

Ricoh also showcased THETA, a spherical camera capable of one-click 360 degree spherical photos. THETA can even record 1080p videos at 15 frames per second. THETA connects with mobile devices using WiFi and THETA app developed by Ricoh. It has 4GB internal memory and comes with auto, shutter and ISO priority modes. Ricoh THETA is priced at Rs 34,770.
