In wake of the seriousness caused by the death of an Architecture student at Acharya Nagarjuna University due to ragging, the city police commissionerate has extended its hands to educate students about the dangerous consequences of ragging.

Though every educational institution has a separate anti-ragging cell to look into the issue, the police took an extra step to ensure that there would be no incidents that come up in the name of love, harassment and discrimination by educating students about the Andhra Pradesh Prohibition of Ragging Act and Anti Ragging Guidelines issued by the central government.

The department including all SHOs is going to sensitise students on the issue, in fifty colleges that fall under the commissionerate limits. They also asked the college administration to put up guidelines and the synopsis of the Ragging Prohibition Act across their notice boards.

According to a department official, “The police commissioner, Gautham Sawang, stressed on public friendly policing, which can be possible through campaigns like this. Students are power and strength. If they are tackled well, they work things out. To make citizens part of policing and to establish right relationship between them, interactive sessions are the best medium.”

“We recently took out a rally on educating students and public about the consequences of ragging in institutions. We have a separate cell for monitoring the relation between students.

There were no complaints registered so far in our college with respect to this aspect,” said the principal of SDM Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala, T Vijaya Lakshmi. In addition, the department has been educating girl students on self-defence, immediate counter and uses of their initiative 4th Lion.
