The race against traffic in the city has gotten worse owing to the ongoing metro rail project. With several right-turns being blocked and a reduction in road space, what usually takes 30 minutes to travel is now taking double the time. As a solution to this problem the government started ‘Automatic Traffic Control (ATC)’ system by installing Loop cameras that observe traffic at junctions and regulate traffic light based on its frequency.

The system began its first run on August 6 and has reported to have saved upto 35 seconds at various signals. Inspectors and SIs of twenty-five traffic police stations are being trained in the workings of the ATC system, which is currently available in 120 traffic junctions under the control of the Hyderabad Commissionerate. With the ongoing Metro works, junctions in Kukatpally, LB Nagar, Secunderabad and Begampet are not using this system.

“We are planning on installing it in additional 25 centers under the GHMC jurisdiction” said Jitender, Addl CP (Traffic Branch) “It it too soon to comment on the efficiency of these systems, but the junctions that are currently implementing this system are working very well. And there is a definite increase in the discipline of the traffic system,” added Jitender.

Cashless chalans bring down defaulters Telangana police went digital in January this year with the cashless enforcement system.“People are responding well to the system, and the amount of challans has dropped drastically,” said CV Anand, Additional Commissioner of Traffic Police. The amount of dues, which are estimated up to Rs 11, 10,000, have been brought down to Rs 1, 50,000 after this system came into place.

The office reported the programme to be performing smoothly. Earlier, traffic violations were booked through contact enforcement or non-contact enforcement method and issuing spot or e-challans to violators. Defaulters after being given due notice would be taken to court if the payment was still pending. Seventeen magistrate courts have been set up in the Hyderabad city limits, to file charge sheets on the defaulters.
