Safilguda and Malkajgiri residents are in dire straits over the ongoing Malkajgiri Drinking Water Project works. Roads have been dug up mercilessly; commuting and parking have become casualties and the number of complaints of snapped up telephone lines is on the rise. This apart, the dug up roads now house stagnated water and residents fear health concerns.

Parking is a huge challenge for residents at Safilguda

The flip side of the ‘development’ works is that it would take at least a year for the project to be implemented. Speaking to CityTab, director of malkajgiri water department M Konda Reddy, said, “We are working on the underground supply of drinking water, which will be supplied from Godavari and Krishna. It will take one year to complete the project and until then the roads cannot be re-laid.”

While residents do welcome the project, they lament that the department does not have an effective plan to implement it. Prabha, one of the resident shares, “Developmental activities are being taken up without giving a thought to our hardships. It is causing lots of inconvenience to; our street is completely damaged.

There is stagnant water all around and so many insects accumulate, which might even cause health problems.”Madhusudan, another resident, adds, “Proper caution is not taken after digging the street. The cones put up to indicate that works being carried out are dim in colour and are not visible at night. This can lead to accidents. There is no place to park vehicles too on our street.”

Disconnected telephone, electricity wires and mixture of drainage water is another common problem which the residents complain. “We are fed up with the instability of the department. It’s an awful and irresponsible behavior of the department who are not bothered about the public. They are blindly destroying streets and spoiling the environment,” fumes Shruthy.
