World Mosquito Day observed on Thursday


A one-day workshop on ‘Recent Advances in Parasitology’ was conducted at Sir Ronald Ross Institute of Parasitology (SRRIP), Begumpet, on World Mosquito Day, Thursday. The event was jointly organised by Department of Zoology and University College of Sciences, Osmania University.

Speaking at the event, superintendent of Government Fever Hospital Dr Shankar, said, “The potential of Sir Ronald Ross Institute of Parasitology should be utilised completely and developed into a world class museum, to inspire the young generation, who are the promising scientists of tomorrow.”

Speaking on the significance of World Mosquito Day, SRRIP director Dr Mohd Massod Hussain said, “Prior to 1947, Hyderabad was the capital-city of Nizam’s dominion, ruled by Muslim of Asafia-dynasty. Surgeon-major Ronald Ross was posted to Secunderabad in 1893, as regimental medical officer of native troops.

He was engaged in research to find out the mode of spread of malaria-fever.” “He succeeded in his research on August 20, 1897, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1902. Hence this day is observed as World-Mosquito-Day,” he concluded.
