The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) took up a mega demolition drive of illegal structures on roads and footpaths in Bowenpally on Friday and Saturday to widen the Mumbai Highway and ease congested traffic. Explaining the initiative, Sujatha Gupta, chief executive officer, SCB, said,

“We are only demolishing encroached shops and houses which fall in B4 category lands (under the control of SCB) and is causing maximum inconvenience to heavy vehicular traffic. The existing 70 feet road is being widened to 120 feet.”“At Bowenpally X Roads, there is a Muslim graveyard which is under the control of Wakf Board.

We are negotiating with the authorities to take control of the land.”50 staff members of the SCB have been deployed to carry out the demolition drive. However some occupants are crying foul over the tactics employed by the SCB.Mohd Murtaza and Mohd Ahmed, owners of Gulf Restaurant and Gulf Bakers, lamented that they were not served any notice ahead of the road widening programme.

“Our structure was constructed after seeking approval from the SCB in 1991. We are ready to cooperate with the SCB for widening the road but they need to compensate us reasonably for the prime land which we are surrendering,” they said.
