In its fifth year, the Grazia Young Fashion Awards presented its winners on the ramp for the first time at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2015 in Mumbai. From apparel to accessories like sunglasses, the winners showed their creative skills on the catwalk with innovative ideas for 2015.
Rixi Bhatia and Jayesh Sachdev
This pair has been on the fashion circuit for several seasons and their label ‘Quirkbox’ made waves during the first showing. Winners in the urban wear category, their collection, called “Love Story”, was inspired by original art visuals in shades of soft emerald, ruby, amethyst and onyx. Their fabrics moved effortlessly from silk, crépe, georgette to chanderi. Silk thread embroidery and colour blocking, which is the designers’ specialty highlighted the garments.
Ragini Ahuja
Her label ‘Ikai’ has been in demand with the fashion followers. As the winner in the surface texture category, Ragini Ahuja’s collection titled ‘The Hairy Tale’ had fabrics like silk, pashmina, leather, suede and chanderi. The theme was created in shades of black, navy, almond, cream, ox red and nude. The dark, almost gothic look was inspired by the beauty and the beast concept.
Chandamma Cariappa
The Chandamma Cariappa label ‘Sole Sisters’ won in the shoes category for a line of khadi shoes, with 100 per cent genuine leather with hand woven khadi fabric as the base.
Pallavi Dhyani
For her label ‘Three’ Pallavi Dhyani’s creations consisted of sixwell constructed ensembles, which took inspiration from clean chaos for linear compositions that were simple and understated. Geometrics and muted colours were turned into quilting, pleating, layering and grid patterns that enabled the designer to win the label alert category.
Malvika Vaswani
Winning in the accessories jewellery segment, Malvika Vaswani’s personal label presented ‘Andalus’ inspired by Moorish architecture. Divided into three sub-series, the Andalus lines featured Cordoba, Granada and Seville where metal plated rose gold jewellery had stain glass and Bidri effects with stark bold forms and geometry.
Salil Kochar
The ‘Phool Mandi’ collection by Salil Kochar scored in the traditionalist’s category with a total of seven garments. Inspired by the flower market there was reverse appliqué with Mukaish work for jackets, shirts, trousers, and kaftan jackets in shades of cobalt, bottle green, beige, black and vibrant colours.
Tina and Nikita Sutradhar
The duo won in the breakthrough act category under their label ‘Miuruku’. The collection compiled of eight garments called ‘The Birthday Party’, had all the excitement of the theme, where shiny vinyl glittered on coats and tops.
Ujjawal Dubey
With men’s wear as his forté under the ‘Antar Agni’ label, Ujjawal Dubey scored a win in the Men’s Wear Segment. Lots of black with patent accents, bold stripes and prints gave depth to the cuts and draped silhouettes.
Sayon Chatterjee
For his label ‘Sayon’ the designer won in the new category eyewear with his handcrafted walnut wood frames, which revealed an innovative approach to the spectacles as well as eye glamour.
Karma Laugani and Gauri Verma
The designing duo’s label ‘Jodi’ scored in the Label Alert Category. Inspired by the 1970’s look, the collection, revealed print inspirations from Ashley Goldberg along with geometrics, squiggles, flora and fauna. The colours were vibrant pink, cerulean, blue, sea green, torch red, blood orange, yellow and indigo. ‘A’ line minis, roomy pants, cut out tops, had hand block Jaipura prints. Totes, clutches, back packs and slings with prints, fringes and patch work complemented the garments.
