Telugu is music to the ears. “Mother tongue is as precious as mother’s milk. One who holds his language high, will prosper in life,” said renowned scholar Vedantam Rajagopala Chakravarthy, while delivering a lecture at the Telugu Language Day celebrations, organised by the Department of Telugu, at Maris Stella College, on Thursday.

“Every Telugu person should feel proud of his language, which is internationally acclaimed as the best in script and conversation,” said Rajagopala Chakravarthy. “One who masters his mother tongue first, can get command over other languages quickly. Telugu is the only language, which sounds melodious during conversation. Telugu words are like music to the ears,” he added.

Encouraging the organisers for the event, he said, “More academic programmes should be organised in schools and colleges to inculcate the knowledge of Telugu language among students. Competitions in essay writing, elocution and Telugu grammar should be organised regularly to promote the language.”

Rajagopala Chakravarthy paid tributes to Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy whose birth anniversary is celebrated as Telugu Language Day, for championing the cause of using the language more comprehensible to common people.

Later, students presented a skit highlighting the need to promote the mother tongue Telugu in the cyber era, which lays greater emphasis on English communication skills. Degree college vice-principal Sr Inyasamma, Telugu department head P Usha, faculty members NV Manga Devi, P Vijaya Prasanna and others were present.
