The fate of Osmania General Hospital (OGH) may very well befall most of the monuments in the city. Thanks to the snail’s pace of administration at the heritage wing of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), a majority of the projects are still in the dock. There are about 360 historical structures that come under the civic body.

Ironically, the Telangana government which publicised the protection of heritage structures in the city is now going slow on its agenda. Tenders for contracts of the projects for conservation of the heritage structures have not been issued. 15 years have lapsed since Charminar Pedestrianisation Project (CPP) started but even now it’s yet to be completed.

K Srinivas Rao, additional director, heritage, who heads GHMC's heritage cell said, “We are pushing the existing projects with the funds allocated but contractors have to come forward.”Tenders have not been floated for quite a few projects. Before bifurcation, there was a Heritage Conservation Committee (HCC), which was given Rs 50 lakh as seed money.

The interest of that money was utilised for heritage conservation projects. But after bifurcation, depending on the priorities of the newly formed government, there is no committee in the city. “Regular inspection of the historical structures with technical experts to maintain them and the required processes for restoration of the structures is to be done for conserving these structures,” said G S V Suryanarayana Murthy, heritage conservation architect.

There are no conservation architects in the GHMC which is a big impediment, aver heritage activists. “The lack of staff is a serious issue that the corporation needs to address,” said P Anuradha Reddy, convenor, INTACH Hyderabad chapter.
