In an interesting turn of events addressing the issue of garbage dumping in the Turkapally trenching yard, Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) Chief Executive Officer, Sujatha Gupta informed residents that they cannot question the SCB’s authority on the area.

Sujatha Gupta met the residents of the area who were led by Malkajgiri MP, Ch Malla Reddy, on Wednesday and explained that the trenching yard has been in SCB’s judicial position since 1925 and is the absolute property of SCB.

“We can use it for any productivity purposes for the benefit of the residents of the cantonment area, and nobody can question its authority,” she said. However, speaking on sympathetic and humanitarian grounds, she added, “We can look to exchange the 13 acres of trenching yard land, provided the State Government gives us equal amount of land at Jawharnagar or in any other area within our judicial reach.”

She cautioned the residents about violating laws and said, “If anybody violates and takes law into their hands, against the interest and provisions of the Secunderabad Cantonment Act 2006, the matter will be taken up seriously and dealt accordingly, including getting a prohibitory order, restraining the entry of the people of the neighboring colonies in the trenching area.”

Currently, the SCB spends Rs 58 lakh per month for garbage dumping charges to the GHMC. Shifting to Jawaharnagar would incur additional expenditure of up to Rs 76 lakh per month, which could prove expensive. Expressing concern over the issue presidents, KN Rao, Chandramouli, Dayanand, KR Dass and other office bearers of the colonies said,

“There are 15 colonies consisting of 15,000 residents experiencing untold suffering for the past few years, due to the dumping of the garbage by the SCB authorities, and our health and lives are exposed to the risks.” The residents including children had staged a dharna earlier this week, against the SCB authorities for dumping garbage in the area.
