Children will now receive free treatment with closure devices for Congenital Heart Defects under the Aarogyasree scheme. The announcement came from Dr Sridhar Kasturi, Senior Interventional Cardiologist, Sunshine Hospitals, in Hyderabad, who was speaking at a symposium on Friday.

Symposium underway at Sunshine Hospitals on Friday

The symposium, which was organised in association with Chalmeda Anandrao Institute of Medical Sciences, Karimnagar, at Hotel Swetha, had awareness sessions on Atrial Septal Defects (ASDs) and Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDAs) and their management with closure devices. Up to 90 people including leading pediatricians and general physicians attended.

Congenital Heart Defects may lead to improper growth in weight, height and other problems. In these patients choice of treatment earlier was open heart surgery, however with the availability of closure devices the treatment procedure is simplified with minimal blood loss and reduced procedure time. These devices are now available free of cost in the forthcoming workshop under Aarogyasree scheme, on September 23.
