Sudden cardiac arrests more fatal than heart attacks. Renowned clinical cardiac Electrophysiologist fom Apollo Hospitals, Dr Aslam M Khan, delivered the ‘Public Garden Walkers\' Association’ 239th monthly health lecture on ‘Sudden Cardiac Arrest – Preventing Early Death’, on Sunday at Public Gardens.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Aslam Khan said sudden cardiac death refers to unexpected natural death from a cardiac cause, within 1 hour of symptom onset.
Majority of these deaths are due to development of an abnormal heartbeat (arrhythmia), which results in the inability of the heart to maintain blood pressure causing death due to lack of vital blood supply to the organs. “It is important to remember that while a heart attack is the number one cause of sudden cardiac death, heart attack and sudden cardiac death are two different conditions,” he said.
Highlighting the magnitude of the problem he said, “Unfortunately, sudden cardiac death affects approximately 7,00,000 people a year in India. To put this into perspective, every minute 1.3 -2.5 people die from this condition.”
The highest incidence of sudden cardiac death tends to occur in young children from birth to 6 months of age and older adults of 45-75 years. Because heart disease in more prominent in elderly and in men, it is this patient population that is at highest risk of sudden cardiac death.
According to Dr Aslam Khan, the key to treatment of sudden cardiac death is prevention. The patient along with their cardiologist has to be aggressive in controlling modifiable risk factors such as blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, and obesity.
They should undergo implantation of an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), which has proven to reduce the chance of dying from sudden cardiac death by 35 per cent to 51 per cent in this high risk population.
