Leading efforts towards orthopaedic surgeries in India, Apollo Hospitals has signed a MoU with Dr Heiko Graichen, Medical Director of Asklepios, Orthopaedic Clinic Lindenlohe, Germany, on Saturday, to train Indian doctors on Revision ‘Total Knee Arthoplasty ‘(TKA).

Prof Dr Heiko Graichen, Medical Director of Asklepios, Orthopaedic Clinic Lindenlohe, Germany; Dr KJ Reddy, Sr Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals and Sangita Reddy, Jt Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals, announced Apollo Hospitals joining hands with Prof Graichen, on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion Prof Dr Heiko Graichen said, “I am extremely pleased to be associated with the orthopaedic surgeons in India. Their skills are on par with the global standards as far as primary knee replacements are concerned, however would need skilling in RTKR, knowing their talent it wouldn't be long before they master it.

Through this collaboration with Apollo Hospitals, we will set up a ‘Centre for Excellence in Revision Total Knee Replacements’ and train Indian Doctors.” Explaining the necessity of the procedure he said, “The cases needing RTKR are extremely complex in India in comparison to what we see in Europe, therefore needs greater dexterity on the part of the surgeons here and this collaboration will help in building those skill sets.”

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is the commonest cause of disability in middle aged and elderly people. About 26 million people are suffering from OA knee of which 7.5 million need joint replacement surgery. TKA has gained immense acceptance amongst the Indian population. Not only does the patient get relieved of the pain but also gets a second chance at a normal life.

With the increasing demands placed on TKA in terms of longevity and function, Revision TKA has become a necessity to address these concerns. It is a crucial surgery because it is mostly the last opportunity for the surgeon to correct whatever is wrong with the patient.

The scope for any error is 0 per cent as the patient's condition is more fragile and generally requires a substantial level of expertise from the surgeon to perform a perfect surgery. This initiative by Apollo towards surgical knowledge sharing between surgeons from different parts of the globe is dedicated to ensure impeccable surgical results for each and every patient.
