The faculty of University of Hyderabad (UoH) will be going on an indefinite relay hunger strike from today where two faculty members will protest from 9 am to 9 pm near the DST bus stop to “address the injustice meted out by the administration”.

The staff are protesting against the alleged gender and racial discrimination carried out on Prof Gracious Temsen, a lady faculty member from North-East, whose house was illegally raided recently.

Following an agitation by faculty and students, the Vice Chancellor constituted a committee to look into the matter. But with no further action on the matter, the staff are now demanding a public apology to the professor, issue a showcause notice to Deputy Registrar Estate and Security and sensitisation of the University community on the issues of discrimination.

Talking about the protest, one of the members of University of Hyderabad Teachers' Association, said, “The raid itself was an act of harassment on the part of the administration, the way it violated the right to privacy and all possible legalities.

The current insensitivity of the administration towards the issue is the second round of harassment meted out to Prof. Temsen and the rest of the teaching community.

Hence we are protesting to make the public aware of the undemocratic and discriminatory practices of the administration.”
