While rainfall in the past few days has brought much needed relief for the city, it has exposed the infrastructural pitfalls in low-lying areas. Jyothi Colony in Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) limits is one such example where rainwater has submerged the locality.

This is a common affair every year. Swamy, a paper merchant said, “Due to choking of the nalas and drain chambers the entire water is overflowing on the roads, streets and stagnating the low-lying houses and is causing heavy losses of property and belongings.”

Highlighting the plight of residents, secretary of Jyothi Colony Residents Welfare Association, SN Sreenivas, said, “SCB authorities should clear choking of the drains by widening it as it has been narrow for over 30 years now.

There are many blockages in the drain lines and we are suffering due to overflow of drains even without these drains.”
