Mohammad Khaja of Mayur Orchestra needs no introduction; he is popular among music lovers of the city. He has more than 5,000 live musical performances to his credit since the formation of the orchestra way back in 1979.
Speaking to The Hans India, Khaja said he chose music as a career inspired by his teacher Sr Imelda of Nirmala Convent in his schooldays. Noted playback singer G Anand who had Swara Madhuri orchestra, encouraged Khaja after recognising his talent. Before setting up his musical troupe, he worked with Lalita Kala Samithi, Bhavana Kala Samithi and other orchestras from 1975 to ‘79.
Khaja who got the opportunity of singing with famous playback singers like SP Balasubrahmanyam, Ramakrishna, Madhavapeddi, Pithapuram, P Susheela, Jikki, Jamuna Rani and Vani Jayaram, said, “My greatest moments to cherish are the compliments I received from KJ Yesudas for composing music for a documentary film.’’
Besides heading Mayur Orchestra, he is also serving as vice-president of the Telugu Artistes Federation, convener of the Rotary Club of Vijayawada cultural committee and advisor to the Music Artistes Association. Nagur Babu who was a stage artiste first, turned a popular singer with the encouragement and support given by Khaja.
In recognition of his rich contribution to the field of music, he was honoured with several awards by the Vijayawada Cultural Academy, Sumadhura Kala Niketan, Bezawada Bar Association, Yuva Kala Vahini of Hyderabad, Dasari Cultural Academy of Guntur and other cultural organisations in the state.
Mentioning the problems to run an orchestra these days, Khaja said, “It is difficult to practise songs as a group for live performances due to the busy schedule of instrumentalists and singers.
However, Mayur Orchestra is able to give live performances regularly due to the wholehearted support extended by members of the group to me. Dedication and hard work are key to my success.’’
