In a remarkable milestone towards cancer treatment, the American Oncology Institute performed a rare bone cancer surgery and hand re-implantation for the first time in Telangana.

Musculoskeletal Surgical Oncologist Dr Kishore Bhavanam Reddy performed the six-hour surgery an 18-year old suffering from bone cancer by successfully removing the cancerous part of distal forearm and re-implanting his hand.

Hailing from Adilabad district, the patient had been suffering from bone cancer in his wrist, medically known as ‘Leiomyosarcoma’ for the last six months. Referring to the surgery Dr Reddy said, “In most of the cancer cases such as this one, the lack of awareness and knowledge leads to severity in the tumor.

Our primary challenge was to restore his limb with full functionality. We performed wide excision of distal forearm with re-implantation of the hand to the remnant forearm.”

The patient is recovering well and will be able to get back to his normal life in next six weeks. Apart from Dr Kishore, Dr Himanshu, Orthopaedic Surgeon and Dr Ravi Kumar, Anaesthelogist were among the operating team of this surgery.
