The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) has decided to form a ‘Water Committee’ to sort out issues relating to the levy of water tariff in slums and colonies including the charges for new connections.

At the SCB’s board meeting on Wednesday, necessary proposals were submitted for arriving at a mutually agreed water tariff for the benefit of residents and the board to generate the required income.

SCB CEO Sujatha Gupta noted that the board is spending Rs 12.24 crore for water each year, but collects a revenue of Rs 6 crore. “There are 22,480 legal and 12,000 illegal water connections.

We have given instructions to the water department to form a 25 member squad to make recoveries from willful defaulters, including attaching and seizing of their assets.

We can crack whip on illegal connections by disconnecting their services and levying huge penalties to enforce discipline,” she said.

Even as the board’s meeting was on, a protest was staged by Annanagar Basthi Residents outside the SCB office as they receive water only once in 15 days instead of 10.
