Hyderabad Race Club celebrates its Foundation Day

The Hyderabad Race Club (HRC) celebrated its Foundation Day on Wednesday. As part of the event races were conducted to honour the founding members of the club who were Major General Nawab Khusru Jung Bahadur, SN Reddy, Maharaja of Vizianagaram, Raja Saheb of Jatprole, Nawab Sultan Ali Khan and Raja Saheb of Challapalli.

The club has been an integral part of a 148-year-old tradition of racing. It started its operations in 1961 in Secunderabad and shifted to Malakpet in 1968 when the racing was revived under Hyderabad Race Club.

The first foundations of the modern HRC were laid in 1968. In 1976, a winter track was added, making it a full-fledged coursework.

Today it is the only Turf Authority in India that houses and owns entire race course premises, complex, tracks, stands, professional quarters, stables and a vast parking lot.

HRC also holds the distinction of having introduced sponsorship to Indian racing. “Horse racing in Hyderabad was started by the Nizam Asaf Jah VI in 1868 at Moula-Ali.

In those days the races were called Deccan Races and later it was rechristened as Hyderabad Races. In 1886 the racing shifted to Malakpet by Nizam Nawab Mir Mahboob Ali Khan as he wanted the race course to be near his palace,” shared a spokesperson of HRC.

Secunderabad Cantonment Board refused to sell the land after the expiry of the lease in 1950s. Nawab Khrusu Jung Bahadur sensed that Secunderabad Race Course would be insufficient if more races were to be held.

He therefore began to look around for another place. Recalling Khusru Jung decision to shift the club his son says, "He chose Malakpet for the club, which was then isolated.

Earlier the club was used privately by Mir Osman Ali Khan. My father used to visit owners, trainers and jockeys to check on them.

"Nawab Khusru Jung Bahadur was also a polo player who had dueled with Rao Raja Hanut Singh and Maharaja Sawai Man Singh of the world famous Jaipur team.

He was the chairman of the club at Secunderabad and was also one of the founders of the Hyderabad Race Club. All the founding members began negotiations with the Nizam for Malakpet Race Course and sought successful approval.

This was a crucial move in the city’s racing history and HRC is only organisation of its kind in the country.
