KIMS achieves breakthrough in minimal invasive pancreatic surgery

Total Laparoscopic Whipple’s Procedure

The Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) has emerged as the leader in minimal invasive surgery on vital organs.

With the support of the institute Dr Madhu Devarasetty and his team performed ten ‘total laparoscopic Whipple’s procedures’ since July 2014.

Commenting on the procedures, Dr Madhu Devarasetty, Consultant Surgical Oncologist and Minimal Invasive Surgeon, Surgical Oncology and Robotic Surgery, KIMS Hospitals, Secunderabad, who led the team at said,

“We are happy that time taken for this procedure has been drastically reduced to 7-8 hrs, while it used to take 10 hours earlier.

“As part of the procedure, we resect the tumor (pancreaticoduodenectomy) and follow it up with reconstruction to establish food intake, pancreatic juice flow and bile flow.

This approach will help the patients return to his/her normal life faster than expected,” he explained.

The procedure is mostly advised for patients with pancreatic and periampullary cancers; patients suffering from lung and cardiac co-morbidities are usually excluded.

Praising the efforts of the Team, Dr B Bhaskar Rao, MD, KIMS hospitals said, “15-20 years back, these type of complex surgeries were not taken up by any surgeon.

For surgeries like these, multi-specialty hospitals serve the best.”

Dr Lakshmikanth, team member for the Whipple’s procedure said, “Cuts and the scars that are left behind after surgeries don’t always heal.

But with Laparoscopy, there are maximum chances that the patient can heal in a lesser time when compared to open surgery.”
