Endowed with a mellifluous voice, Soumya Narasimhan is a rising star of the twin cities who has earned a name and fame in Carnatic music circles. As part of monthly concerts, Kalasagaram arranged a vocal concert in Keyes High School on Saturday. Music lovers enjoyed the programme which was arranged aptly in the memory of Sangeetha Kalanidhi, late Nedunuri Krishnamurthy.

Soumya, who has been learning Carnatic music for the last 15 years, is now under tutelage of Hyderabad Sisters (Lalitha and Haripriya). A graded artist of AIR, Soumya is the winner of “Swara Raga Sudha” competition of Sri Venkateswara Bhakthi Channel(SVBC) and finalist of “Nadbhed” conducted by Spicmacay and won many more laurels from prestigious organisations in India.

Soumya started her concert with “Vara Vallabha Ramana” (Hamsadhwani) of GNB appealingly treating it as an invocation item too. She then took famous krithi of Thyagaraja “Gana moorthey” (Ganamurthi) with a brief swarakalpana, putting the listeners into the ambit of chaste music. Dealing with a speedy number “Maari Vairi Ramana” (Nasikabhushani), Soumya moved on to “Entha Neyrchinaa” (Saaveri), a famous krithi of Patnam Subramnya Ayier and changed from one raga to another effortlessly.

As the concluding items, she dealt with “Telisithey Mokshamu” (Hamsadhwani) and Jaya Jaya Rama” (Manirangu) both of Annamacharya in all its fairness. Taniavarthanam by instrumental team Karra Srinivs (Mridangam) and B Janardhan (Ghatam) was pleasing while violin support extended by Tajaswi Mallela proved to be worth watching. The mike and sound system hampered the concert many a time, however. Barring this little disruption, the concert proved her potentiality as a good vocalist from our state.
