Musicians recount jazz history

Much to the amusement of the audience, musicians, Dennis Powell, Benjamin Christopher and Karthik Kalyan mesmerised the crowd by introducing them to the history of jazz music at Houz of Blues in Jubilee Hills recently.

As the night grew long, the musicians brought culture and contemporary jazz notes to fore with an entrancing performance. Dennis Powell (keyboard artiste), Benjamin Christopher (bass) and Karthik Kalyan (drummer) performed own compositions and covers including numbers like “Misty” by Erroll Garner, “Wave” by Carlos Jobim, “Tenderly” by Walter Cross, “The song is you” by Jerome Kern, “Solar” by Miles Davis, “Satin doll” by Duke Ellington and “Angel eyes” by Matt Dennis.

Speaking on his love for jazz, Dennis Powell said, “I love jazz because it gives me the freedom to express freely. It has lesser rules yet can be quite mathematical and calculative. One can improvise, create and design while performing.”

Hyderabad has been organising jazz nights for some time now. Commenting on the fate of the genre in the city, he said, “It is our duty to create an awareness and liking for jazz in Hyderabad. More jazz bands need to regularly play live. I hope more people will be enthused by our performances and join us.”
