Speaking at the eighth ‘Global Summit on Vaccines, Therapeutics, Healthcare and Cancer Therapy’ at HICC, GP Talwar said in his keynote address, “It is a long road before this vaccine completes all trials and is made available commercially. However, we are hopeful.

“We may licence it to a local Hyderabad company,” he added. The three-day conference that was organised by OMICS International began on November 4.

Elaborating on incidents of Leprosy and the development of a vaccine for it, GP Talwar said, “Leprosy infects one 1 per cent of humans; 99 per cent are immune to contracting the disease. The National Leprosy Programme is based on diagnosing and treating the patients with multi drugs regimen.

The prevalence of the disease has come down significantly over the years. Meanwhile the incidence of new cases was higher each year than the prevalence figures. In some endemic districts, these have reached alarming figures.

“Drugs do not correct the immunological deficit. We developed an immunotherapeutic vaccine that was approved the Drugs Controller General and also by the USFDA. It will be made use for public shortly,” he added.

Prof Kakarla Subba Rao, former Director of NIMS while delivering the keynote address at the Global Summit on Cancer Therapy said, “India is catching up with the rest of the world in the incidence of cancer from head to toe. Carcinoma of the cervix and breasts top the list of cancers. However, cancer can be cured if detected early.”

About 200 delegates from across the world participated in the conference including Mahendra Pal Yadav of Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Abby Abraham of Algorithm Inc and Halmuthur M Sampath Kumar of Indian institute of Chemical Technology.
